Prior to this project, I hadn't made materials in Unreal before, ever. Making a realistic glass texture, therefore, was not something I could make just by guessing. I turned to the wonderful world of YouTube tutorials.
Considering most of this scene is comprised of one kind of glass and then a few differing kinds of metal/plastic, I reasoned I had better start with making the glass, and then adapt the properties of the glass to make differing surfaces.
I ended up following a tutorial [1] by vrayguide [2] , which I found extremely effective on the glass. Personally, I would highly recommend his process: he clearly showed every step he took and explained why he took each step he did.
Before applying the material, the scene looked like this.

After making and applying the material, the scene now looks like this.

I'm extremely happy with this. This basic lighting doesn't fully do it justice, but I am very happy to take this scene forward and do all the fancy lighting. This update isn't as long because there isn't really much to describe: I followed a tutorial to make the material and applied it to the mesh, and I don't know if me describing how the material is constructed would actually help.
However, I do have to say that I spent a good deal of time tweaking the material to make it perfect for me, and the different versions of it for this scene: I took the basic glass and made it opaque for the metal flooring, and made a cloudier version for the bed.
Next update: proper lighting and finishing up!
