Adding the nice details and uploading!

Updated: Apr 24, 2020

I've spent the day today adding what COULD be the finishing touches. I say 'could' because I'm a bit scared of adding too much and making the model ugly and noisy, but I also haven't done an incredible amount of adding stuff.

What I have added, however, I am very pleased with. I've decided to go with a more worn, slightly battered look for the finer details. My reasoning is that the shop owner would likely be inside building machines or casting spells all day, and as long as there's a light on in the shop people would go to visit it.

The shop started off in Substance Painter looking like this:

I started by improving the ambient occlusion map, adding in the details of the wooden planks and bricks, and smoothing out the glass panes. When I had finished with that, I added a shiny reflective layer on top of the glass to make it look more realistic. The result of that was this:

After this, I felt that the main thing that needed to be done was make the shop show its age. Looking at the houses on my street or around where I live (which I was only looking at when I went on my government mandated once daily walk), the brickwork and roofing is always covered in dirt and rust which discolours the once vibrant reds, greys and browns beneath. I thought therefore that a shop, probably built in the Victorian era, would definitely have such signs of age.

I began by adding rust to the chimneys and pipework, and then I went and dusted the whole building with, well, dust. I gave more emphasis to the wooden accents, because unless the wood was protected somehow, the London life and climate would definitely have discoloured it.

Finally, the end result of the day looks like this:

Uploaded to Sketchfab, it looks like this:

I am very happy with how the whole shop looks, and it is really gratifying to see it come from a set of rough sketches to a whole building in engine. As I said, I don't want to overdo the building and make it messy, so I may well simply leave it there: with the final parts of the deadline being record a flythrough and write a small essay, anyway, that may be the wisest decision.
